Demi Lovato has gone through many changes in her life in recent times. In May of last year she asked to be identified by a neutral pronoun (they/them) since she does not identify as either a woman or a man. However, in April of this year she agreed to be called by feminine pronouns again.
This is a new decision by the artist that causes controversy and confusion in the minds of many. The question that remains is what motivated these changes. She answered about it in an interview with Spout Podcast.

“I actually adopted the she/her pronouns back with me. So, for me, I’m such a fluid person that I don’t really know or think what I am“.
“I felt that, especially in the last year, my energy was balanced between my masculine and feminine energies, so when I was faced with the choice to go to the bathroom and it was just ‘women and men,’ I didn’t do it. I don’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t necessarily feel like a woman. I didn’t feel like a man. I just felt like a human being. And that’s what it’s all about. To me, it’s like feeling human inside“, she explained.
“Lately I’ve been feeling more feminine, so I’ve adopted it again. But I think the important thing is that nobody is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes with pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning, it’s all about respect“, Lovato concluded.
Even when she was still using the neuter pronoun, she was very understanding when people got it wrong. As she herself said, respect is the most important thing in this kind of situation.
