Jennifer Lopez opens up about the importance of sleep after suffering a panic attack brought on by exhaustion early in her career. Today, the singer claims that a good night’s rest can make her look a decade younger.
In her recent newsletter On The JLo she addressed her sleeping habits and said that at 52 years old, she spends seven to nine hours in bed each night. She admitted that she made it a priority after suffering a major scare in the late 1990s.
“There was a time in my life when I used to sleep three to five hours a night. I was on set all day and in the studio all night, and on weekends I toured and shot videos. I was in my 20s. years and I thought I was invincible“, she said.
“I was sitting in a caravan with all the work and stress that comes with it and coupled with the lack of sleep to recover mentally, it took a toll on me. I went from feeling totally normal to thinking about what I had to do that day and all of a sudden I felt I couldn’t move,” she recalled.

Lopez said that she was “completely frozen” and that she “couldn’t see clearly” and she didn’t know what was happening. Lopez explained that she was “terrified.”
The singer’s doctor gave her some advice that changed her life, telling her that she had to sleep seven to nine hours a night, avoid caffeine consumption and combine exercise with work.
“I think of sleep as a little time machine. You go to bed and you go into a space where you preserve yourself and then you come out a new person and younger than you were before. Sometimes I wake up and I’m like, ‘Wow! ! I just lost 10 years off my face.’ That’s what a good night’s sleep can do and it adds up over time“.
