Counter-Strike is a true icon of competitive shooters. The saga began in the late ‘90s as a mod created by two university students until Valve officially released it in 2000. Since then, it has left a lasting mark on the genre, influencing generations of players. Among all its versions, Counter-Strike 1.6 remains the most beloved by millions of fans. If you’re one of them, there’s good news.
A few hours ago, a group of developers and fans announced on YouTube CS: Legacy, a fully functional remake of Counter-Strike 1.6. Unlike mods, this project was built using Valve’s official development tool, Source Engine (2013 version), but with significant improvements in graphics, visual effects, and other key aspects.
The game features fully customized assets and code, along with enhanced rendering and shaders. CS: Legacy is set to launch on Steam in 2025, with more details to be revealed in the coming weeks. “After the transition from Global Offensive to CS2, we wanted to bring back the classic Counter-Strike to keep its legacy alive—not as a mod, but as a full-fledged game,” the creators explain.
Meanwhile, Counter-Strike 2 continues to break records. It recently hit an all-time peak of 1,824,989 concurrent players on Steam, according to SteamDB, and remains the most popular game on Twitch, with hundreds of thousands of daily viewers, as reported by Insider Gaming. It looks like even more records are on the horizon.
