South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) recommended on Friday exercising extreme caution when using the Chinese artificial intelligence service DeepSeek, which has recently drawn significant attention and raised many concerns due to unresolved security issues.
The warning was issued after several South Korean government ministries blocked access to DeepSeek on their internal network computers this week, citing concerns about how the company manages data and what it might do with it.
“Considering the ongoing security concerns related to the use of DeepSeek, we recommend using it with caution,” the PIPC stated in a press conference.
The commission explained that it is analyzing the data transmitted when using the service and will introduce measures to ensure its safe use, particularly regarding personal information protection.
The warning follows an inquiry the PIPC sent to the Chinese company last month, requesting details about its data collection policies.
The commission stated that it conducted the investigation through multiple channels and is working with other global data protection agencies, including the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Additionally, it announced plans to seek cooperation from Chinese authorities through official diplomatic channels.
