California has the world’s first 3D printed candy shop

In Los Angeles, California, there is a recent digital bakery and candy shop named “The Sugar Lab.” The place prints out 3D figures using materials to create small-sized, innovative and edible works of art. The founder, Kyle Von Hasseln, got the idea while while he was at grad school and since then, they have used 3D food printers and are offering a unique treat to their clients.

To create the candies, a design is first put into the machine, just like when you send a document to a printer, but in this case, the chefs will be printing out candy. Due to this reason, they utilize flavored, powered sugar for every layer in the candy, instead of ink. After that, they spray colors onto the treats and proceed to print multiple sweet delicacies at once.

Finally, the new candies are “excavated” out of the printer and then an air blaster is used to clean up or remove any sugar powder excess. About this, head chef at the digital bakery and candy shop Victoria Rose Johnson, said that “there are things that I cannot make as a cake decorator that we can do here.” In addition, the founder talked about the speed of the process saying that “We print them at about 1 per minute, so that’s super-fast.” and later added that “there’s no other 3d printing technology that can go at that speed.”

The Sugar Lab sells pre-made candies for about 18 to 26 dollars each. They also take custom designs, however these are only preppared for a minimum spending of $1000.
