A huge fissure in Southeast Africa could make a new ocean

A massive five-thousand-kilometer fissure is currently crossing Southeast Africa. A group of researchers have confirmed this information and have also warned that this unusual event could make the African continent split and potentially create a new ocean.

According to the expert’s research, this strange phenomenon could cause coastal countries to become islands. This is because there are possibilities for a new sea to form, and it could be stretching from Ethiopia to Mozambique. Apparently, The huge fissure has been growing larger as the years pass by. For instance, a crack appeared in 2005 and it was more than 50 kilometers long. Similarly, another fissure was spotted in 2008 and it caused heavy rainfalls. As a consequence, a number of households had to be evacuated.

The research explains that these fissures are taking place in the African continent as a result of the EARS (East African Rift System).  According to a study published in June, EARS is considered to be a massive ejection of superheated rocks from the Earth. Unfortunately, it is still unknown if the rupture of these cracks and fissures will have the same continued pace and eventually open an oceanic basin, like the Red Sea.

In concordance with Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Ken McDonald, the natural phenomenon could become a version of the Atlantic. However it was also stated that Africa will not split in the foreseeable future, and this might take place in the next five million years. When this does happen, Tanzania, Somalia and part of Ethiopia could form a new continent.
