The massive wildfires occurring across Canada have been also affecting other cities over the past few weeks. For example, there have been environmental emergencies and different restrictions in cities like New York as a result of the hazardous air condition. Moreover, other countries, such as Norway, have also confirmed that the smoke from the wildfires has reached Northern Europe on a smaller scale.
This time, parts of the Midwest of the United States were on alert as the smoke from the fires in Canada affected the air quality in Chicago and Detroit. The first city was covered in thick smoke last Tuesday, June 27. In addition, Detroit was put under an air quality advisory until Wednesday, June 28, following the National Weather Service statement affirming that the smoke covered the skyline. and a burning smell filled the city.
As a result of these situations, both places are now leading the top ranking for the cities with the worst air quality in the world. About this, the National Weather Service meteorologist, Zachary Yack, affirmed that the quality of the air is unhealthy due to the number of particulates from the Canadian wildfires that have drifted into different territories in the U.S.
In order to combat this issue, the authorities have advised citizens to avoid doing activities outside, such as walking or exercising, as long as the air quality level is low. In addition, it is recommended to stay inside and use air purifiers when possible. If that is not an option, people who have to go out must wear an N95 mask to protect themselves from the unsafe smoke.
