Pope Francis underwent surgery after the results of his computed tomography were revealed last Tuesday, June 6. The Catholic religious leader had an operation due to bowel obstruction risk yesterday, Wednesday, June 7 in the Gemeli Hospital located in the city of Rome. He will remain hospitalized for several days, according to the Vatican.

The Holy See affirmed that the Pope was assisted by the medical team that has always treated him. In addition,  they explained the operation was necessary as a result of an incisional hernia, which has been provoking pain in His Holiness. After the procedure was completed the Holy See Press released a statement confirming the operation went well.

His Holiness Pope Francis spent a day resting. The medical staff following the Pontiff’s post-operative course reports that he has been fed a liquid diet. His hemodynamic (blood pressure) and respiratory parameters are stable. The post-operative course appears regular.

This medical intervention took place after Francis had surgery on July 4, 2021, in the colon. During this procedure, a part of this organ was removed. The operation had positive results and was discharged from the hospital 10 days after. Currently, this is the third time Pope Francis enters the hospital in Rome. It is also important to mention that he is an 86-year-old man and has been having problems in his right knee, which has resulted in mobility issues. Because of this, he has been using a cane and a wheelchair.
