Pokémon is one of the biggest entertainment franchises in the world, and they are clearly aware of it. For that reason, the Japanese company has revealed an update with the total amount of games they have sold ever since they took the market by storm in 1996.
The numbers have been shared today (May 27), and the Pokémon Company, which consists of Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures, has revealed they have sold around 40 million copies more to be added in their catalog (as of March 31, 2023).
The raise in sales has mainly come from the main games, which were released last year. Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet were debuted in November 2022, and they were able to sell millions of copies in just a couple of days. As a result, Scarlet and Violet became the best Nintendo releases in the history of the company, regardless of glitches and performance issues the game presented initially.
In total, the game franchise has already surpassed 480 million units. This means the Pokémon games are quite close to beat Tetris, which is in third place in the most popular video game franchises, with 495 million units sold. Mario is in first place with a total of 823.38 million units.
According to estimations, The Pokémon Company could be easily breaking Tetris’ record in the up-coming update they will be having next year. In addition to all the previous facts, the Japanese video games is available in 9 languages, with presence in 89 countries and regions, and their anime series have been broadcasted (and now streamed) in more than 190 countries around the globe.
