Jennette McCurdy explains why she was jealous of Ariana Grande during ‘Sam & Cat’

The memoir of actress Jennette McCurdy, called “I’m Glad My Mother Died“, has been widely commented on in the media and on social networks due to the revelations that the interpreter of Sam, in the iCarly series, made about backstage at Nickelodeon shows.

According to ET, the publication also revealed that the actress had mixed feelings towards her “Sam & Cat” sitcom co-star, Ariana Grande. The two starred in a season of the attraction that aired between 2013 and 2014.

In her book, McCurdy refers to Grande as “a pop star on the rise” and says she regularly missed filming because she had commitments in her music career when she was supposedly not entitled to the same luxuries.

I had two job offers during iCarly that I had to turn down because the iCarly crew wouldn’t let me out of episodes to shoot them”, says McCurdy.

The week they told me that Ariana wouldn’t be here and that they would write the episode around her absence, which caused her character to be locked in a box. Are you playing with me?“, Jennette complained.

So I have to turn down movies while Ariana sings at the Billboard Music Awards? Fuck it”, she continued.

In her book, the actress also comments on the reasons that made her “jealous” of Ariana. According to Jennette, Grande grew up with a privileged financial and family structure, while she dealt with a cancerous mother who “was constantly crying about not being able to pay the rent“.

And I often make the mistake of comparing my career to Ariana’s. I can’t help it. I’m constantly in the same environment as her, and she doesn’t try to hide her successes“.

Ariana is at a stage in her career where she’s on every young influencer list out there. And I’m at the stage in my career where my team is excited to be the new face of Rebecca Bonbon, a teen clothing line with a cat sticking its tongue out. Sold exclusively at Walmart”, Jennette compared.

Although she was irritated by the situation, none of it made her want to end the show. The breaking point, according to McCurdy, was a day Grande arrived for filming after a night of playing charades at Tom Hanks‘ house.

That was the moment I broke up. I couldn’t take it anymore. Musical performances and magazine covers… you name it, I’ll get over it. But playing a family game at the home of two-time Oscar winner and six-time nominee Tom Hanks? I finished“.

So now, every time she misses work, it feels like a personal attack. Every time something exciting happens to her, I feel like she stole that experience from me”, finished.
