Will Smith banned from the Oscars for 10 years for assaulting Chris Rock

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) finally dictates the punishment of Will Smith for his controversial assault on Chris Rock on stage at the last Oscar gala, last Sunday, March 27th, in the 94th broadcast of the awards.

The legendary actor is strictly prohibited from attending any ceremony performed by said organization, including the Oscars itself for a period of 10 years.

The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage.

Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation. The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.

The decision made by the Academy is due to what they call “unacceptable and harmful behavior” and they add that “we also hope that this begins a period of healing and restoration for all those involved and those who have been impacted by it“.

Smith accepts the punishment of him by the Academy, and shares a brief statement that reads as follows: “I accept and respect the decision of the Academy.” The actor for his part had previously resigned as a member of the Academy a couple of days ago, and added that he would accept any disciplinary measures.
