Elon Musk made headlines again, this time for calling GoFundMe “professional thieves”. The American platform, known worldwide for serving as a for-profit crowdfunding site that allows people to raise money, was criticized by the billionaire after suspending the fundraising campaign in support of Canadian truckers protesting against mandatory vaccination.
Musk called out GoFundMe for practicing double standards, also sharing a tweet with a short text saying “This is not my money“, accompanied by a meme with two photos.
The first image is labeled “amateur thieves“, in which a train is seen on a railroad track surrounded by broken packages due to the massive looting reported in mid-January in Los Angeles, California. The second contains the platform’s logo with the phrase “professional thieves”.
Later, Musk shared a GoFundMe screenshot promoting a campaign in the area known as ‘Capitol Hill Organized Protest’ in the city of Seattle. According to the report, that space was occupied by activists amid the protests against racism and police brutality that shook the US in 2020 following the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of the Police.

“Double standards?” asked the businessman in an apparent allusion to the decision of GoFundMe to suspend fundraising in support of the so-called ‘freedom convoy‘ Canadians. The stoppage of the GoFundMe campaign for truckers came after more than 10 million Canadian dollars, equivalent to about 7.9 million US dollars, had already been raised.
For its part, the platform announced that it will refund donations to contributors, while the remaining money will go “to charities verified and selected by the organizers of the freedom convoy“.
